See What Happens When You Don’t Do Your Research!

… not ha ha funny, but Oh Crap, what do I do now funny… sigh.

So I go to my local fish store and see the coolest fish I think I’ve ever seen. This keep little pleco with white spots. He’s all of an inch and a half long. He’s listed as a ‘gold spot pleco’. They had exactly one and he was $13. I thought, I don’t like plecos, but I talked my self into him after the LFS guy (someone I used to trust), said, “this is one of the small ones… nine inches tops”.

After some research, first turning up nothing on ‘gold spot anything’. I checked out Planet Catfish, at about the same time I posted in the “What Pleco do you have” thread here. Within minutes, both threads had the same result…

Acanthicus adonis…128094#p128094

Within 12 months or so, he’s going to be a foot long and eating my cories. Within 2-3 years, he’ll be two feet long and hanging over the edge of my tank. When he reaches his maximum size 39 inches!!!! He’ll probably be chasing my cats… not catfish, but my 20 lbs bobcat.

Yeah, you saw right. This things is going to get to a little over 3 feet long.

My favorite quote from the Planet Catfish page “easily be the dominant fish of a 1000 gallon aquarium”!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?

  1. Hmmm… seems like a good eatin fish myself. Other than that, HOLY CRAP! I guess those Amazon fish are just huge, and pretty mean suckers at that.

    Good luck my friend.

  2. That sucks, Kevin. Hope you find something else awesome to take the “little” guy’s place.

    • I have to second An17n&#82at;s analysis about the pitfalls of a politics structured around colonization. While statehood as a goal may be achieved through such a politics in the vein of anti-colonial nationalism, what kind of politics, rights and community does it envision in the new state–I would imagine are the concerns one continues to harbor.

  4. Tim,Thanks for your conn&mt.embsp; This sounds like it could be a challenging time of life.  It sounds like you are very aware of the feelings this time of life has created.  I will look forward to hearing from you again in the future as to how you have approached this. Thanks so much for your reply.
